European NIS2 Directive

In an increasingly advanced and interconnected digital landscape, understanding the types of cyber threats and defense strategies has now become a crucial point for organizations and businesses. In recent years, in fact, the dimension of cyber attacks has grown steadily both in terms of frequency and severity, as also highlighted by the latest Clusit Report 2024 (which recorded for 2023 an increase in the attack curve of 12% compared to the previous year).

The European NIS2 Directive

The European NIS2 Directive, officially entered into force in January 2023, is also part of this scenario with the aim of increasing the resilience capacity and response to cyber attacks by the European Union and individual Member States.

Compared to the previous NIS Directive of 2016, this new regulation has brought a significant restructuring of the cybersecurity strategies of the entities involved, promoting a more uniform and updated approach to the growing increase in increasingly sophisticated and advanced cyber attacks.

For this reason, Bitia has oriented its cybersecurity interventions towards precise and punctual adherence to the standards prescribed by the new Directive, with the aim of aligning our solutions with the European model.

Entities involved in the NIS2 Directive

A wide spectrum of large, medium and small enterprises operating within the essential sectors of energy, transport, banking and digital infrastructures is involved in the NIS2 Directive, also including digital service providers in the e-commerce, search engines, cloud computing, ICT service management, public administration and space sectors.

To these are added companies operating in “other critical sectors”, such as postal services, waste management, food production, medical device manufacturing, computer and electronics manufacturing, digital service providers, research organizations, communication network providers, and electronic communication services.

When and how to intervene?

The actors interested in this Directive will have to adapt their cybersecurity systems by October 18, 2024. After this date, those who have not complied with these obligations may incur sanctions up to a maximum of 10 million euros.
